Liz, a blackjack dealer working in New Orleans has just learned of some misplaced jewelry, which she later learns is stolen; and she’s determined to find it. She has returned home to Key West under the guise of visiting her childhood friend, Maggie, who owns The Dream Shop. Initially unaware of the real reason for Liz’s visit, or the danger involved Maggie plays a crucial role in Liz’s search. Desperate to find the jewels Liz risks her life and people are killed while on the same chase. During her visit in Key West, Liz takes time to enjoy sunning on the beach, meets a beautiful voodoo princess, visits the local watering holes and even meets an interesting new man. All the while she hunts down the missing stolen jewelry. This mystery novel, Trouble In the Keys, takes place at the southernmost point of the United States, Key West, Florida.

Trouble in the Keys Bone Island Series Volume 1 Susan Stafford 9781511848107 Books

The plot started out well but it seemed the author kept adding things out of the blue, like she had to add to it when she ran out of viable material to keep the book going. There wasn't any consistency. She also demonstrated a poor writing style, use of language. The characters didn't seem to have that good of friendship which many times the author seemed to try to imply, but their conversations between the two seemed ingenuine. Also, the rags to riches just doesn't cut it, you owe money for gambling, someone pays off your debt and a friend offers you a job as massage therapist which is never disclosed how she got or was licensed to be such. Just too many unbelievable concepts to make it interesting and a read to appreciate. Again, I felt the writing style was very poor.

Trouble in the Keys Bone Island Series Volume 1 Susan Stafford 9781511848107 Books Reviews

I enjoyed this book. It made me remember being in Key West. I went on a honeymoon to Key West the trip was great anyway! It was nice there but I was looking for beached which I was told when I was there that in Key West there was only man-made beaches. booo! This book made me remember the good times of my trip. You should try it, if you have never been to Key West then you can go with this book. Book 2 I'm sure will be good too. *I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*
Liz plans to visit her friend in Key West for vacation and then moves the date up after finding out her friend may have some valuables in storage. By the end of the book, I realized that I had read the second in this series, Spirits in the Keys, before this one and I liked that one better mainly because I didn't care for the character of Liz. She really wasn't a very good friend and it was hard to imagine why Maggie was so devoted to her. Besides getting Maggie into dangerous situations, she was too pushy about encouraging Maggie to drink, smoke cigars, go to dives. I enjoy light mysteries, but this was a little darker than I prefer. Liz was still quirky in the second book but not as encouraging of negative activity.
Reading this book left me wondering if I missed a few pages here and there. Characters often refer to things that haven't happened, some seem to know each other although they haven't met before. Maggie talks about the jewels that fall from her bag as if she thinks someone else dropped them. Overall, facts keep getting inserted that don't affect the plot and are just wasted pages to read. Anf finally, far too may words are wasted describing various potions Maggie is putting together, which have absolutely nothing to do with the story except, again, add unnecessary words and pages. I wanted to like it and planned to read the next installment but have decided that I have better things to do with my time. Sorry.
Interesting twists and turns! Enjoyed it immensely! Anticipating the next volume, and more writings from this author! Great job!
I really enjoyed the book. It kept me guessing till the end. Some grammatical errors bit I believe this was the publishers problem. Not the author's. She is currently working on her second book. Can't wait to read it.
I rated this book based on the story, as well as the characters and the history of Key West. It was an interesting and colorful story. It also brought back memories from once living in Key West. I will happily recommend it to friends and family!
Readable, but left me with a little bit of the feeling that I have missed something while reading this book. I am not sure what but it is there for me.
